Pupillage and Recruitment

New vacancies for pupillage will be posted on this site. We will also make an announcement via our social media accounts. We will review our pupillage requirements on an annual basis.

Applications from established practitioners, at all levels of seniority, will always be considered. Expressions of interest should be made in writing, in the first instance, and addressed to Mr. Robert Skyner and Mr Richard Canning marked “Confidential”.

Pupillage 2019

Chambers is inviting applications for one pupillage to commence in September/October 2019.

Pupillage will either be criminal, or mixed civil/criminal dependent on the candidate.

If Chambers consider there to be 2 outstanding candidates, we will consider taking a second pupil to start in September/October 2019 or 2020, dependent on the candidate.

Applications should be sent to chambers by email to [email protected] and the application email should attach the following documents:
1) A covering letter stating whether you are applying for the crime or mixed pupillage;

3) A completed copy of the pupillage application form.

The form is available to download from here
The closing date for applications is midnight on the 1st day of March 2019.

Description
Chambers attracts a significant volume of junior advocacy work and prides itself on developing pupils and junior tenants, helping them become strong advocates capable of a sustained career at the bar.

Pupil Supervisors
Pupils will likely be supervised by one or both Heads of Chambers – dependent on criminal/mixed pupillage. Criminal pupillage will cover both Defence and Prosecution work up to RASSO Grade 4 level. Mixed pupillage will also cover all civil hearings up to Multi-Track Trials.
Pupils will share their supervisor’s room and accompany them in all aspects of their practice. You may, from time to time, also work with other Members of Chambers covering Magistrates Courts work if warranted by your development.

First Six
You will go to court and attend conferences on a daily basis with your pupil supervisor. You will also assist with undertaking drafting and written advices as well as legal research.

Second Six
You will take on an increasing amount of your own work and as the tenancy decision approaches are likely to be in court three of four times per week.

Award
Chambers guarantees earnings of a minimum of £20,000, comprising of a £8,000 award during the first six and guaranteed earnings of £12,000 in the second six. However, past pupils have far exceeded these figures in their second six, earning well over and above the guaranteed minimum. We therefore estimate yearly earnings in the region of £20,000-£30,000.
